California conservatives wanted change. What they got was a British transplant with a Silicon Valley wife, Democrat-adjacent money, and a résumé built in the corridors of London power politics. Steve Hilton did not come to California to save it. He came to California because his wife got a job offer from Google in 2012 and he followed her here. There is a difference between a man who fights for a place because it is his home and a man who showed up because his wife’s career brought him here and he decided to make himself useful. California was Steve Hilton’s opportunity. It was never his calling.
He could not make it in his own country. He served as David Cameron’s director of strategy in the UK — the same David Cameron who presided over a Conservative Party so ineffective it eventually handed Britain to the socialists Hilton now claims to oppose. When that chapter closed, he packed his bags and followed his wife to California, taught at Stanford, started a podcast, got a Fox News show, and decided that made him qualified to run the largest state in the union. Britain did not need what he was selling. He came here instead.
Now let’s talk about the household California conservatives just handed a primary victory to.
Rachel Whetstone, Hilton’s wife, has lived in the United States since 2012. She has worked here. She has earned tens of millions of dollars here — $6.7 million from Netflix alone in a single year. She has built her entire career here. And in over a decade of living in this country she has never become an American citizen. The man who wants to govern California followed a woman here who still has not committed to this country. That is not a technicality. That is a statement about where their loyalty actually lives.
Whetstone spent six years as Chief Communications Officer at Netflix — one of the most aggressively progressive entertainment companies on the planet. Netflix has spent years pushing content that sexualizes children, normalizes gender ideology, and attacks traditional Christian values at every turn. She was not a passive employee. She was the chief communications officer. She was the voice of that company. She shaped and defended its public image through every controversy it generated. The wife of the man who wants conservative Christian votes in California spent six years protecting and promoting Netflix to the world.
And the man himself? Steve Hilton became an American citizen in 2021 — nine years after arriving here. He held dual citizenship until 2025, when he finally renounced his British passport, conveniently timed just as his gubernatorial campaign was launching. He did not let go of Britain because he had fully committed to America. He let go of Britain because keeping it was becoming a political liability.
Meanwhile Chad Bianco was right here. Born and raised in California. Elected sheriff of Riverside County twice by the people of this state. A lawman who stood in front of crowds and said the California dream had turned into a nightmare — because he lived here and watched it happen. A man who said he was tired of watching his friends leave this state and their kids leave this state. That is not a talking point. That is a man who loves a place.
On Facebook, for every one person supporting Hilton, there were fifty supporting Bianco. The grassroots knew. The people who actually live here, who have watched this state collapse in real time, who have been fighting for it without a Fox News platform or a Silicon Valley network — they knew who the real candidate was.
Then Trump endorsed Hilton in April and the machine took over.
This is what the illusion of choice looks like. Two names on a ballot that appear to offer something different but lead to the same place. The Democratic Party did not need to win this primary. They just needed to make sure the right Republican lost. A well-funded British transplant with a progressive tech executive wife and perfect timing was far easier to manage than a California sheriff with nothing to lose and everything to fight for.
California conservatives need to stop being dazzled by accents, television shows, and Trump endorsements and start doing the work of vetting the people who want their vote. A résumé is not a record. A platform is not a conviction. And a man who spent nine years here before deciding to become American is not the same as a man who never had the option of being anything else.
Chad Bianco deserved better. California deserved better.
A wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf. The wool does not change the teeth.
